Manchester United are reportedly preparing to approach Pep Guardiola as their next manager.

The Daily Mail claim executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is having doubts over Jose Mourinho's suitability - especially regarding his lack of interest in youth development.

United want to beat Manchester City and Chelsea to bring in Guardiola, who is leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

But while Woodward is reluctant to sack Louis van Gaal, they are believed to be looking for replacements in case they are forced to pull the trigger.

It is believed that Guardiola will want to manage in the Champions League and the fact United current sit in fifth place puts a move in doubt.

But it has been reported that United will still make their best possible offer for the former Barcelona man.

Jose Mourinho would make Edinson Cavani his first target if he became Manchester United manager, according to the Daily Star.

The Uruguayan has long been linked with a move to the Premier League and Mourinho could look to bring him to Old Trafford to help solve their goalscoring woes.

Mourinho is the favourite to become the next United boss should Louis van Gaal lose his job following the poor run of form.

Cavani is thought to be unsettled at PSG and would be open to a move after notching up a record of a goal every other game in Ligue 1.

Manchester United will compete with Liverpool for the services of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Lucas Moura this winter, according to The Telegraph.

The 23-year-old is thought to be available for a little over £20million after it appeared that PSG were ready to listen to offers.

Both United and Liverpool are looking to inject some pace and life into their teams, which Brazilian international Moura would be able to do.

The Newcastle United man has been linked with a move away from St James' Park, with the Red Devils among the clubs believed to be in the running.
And the 22-year-old former Tenerife forward has admitted United have been in touch, report the Manchester Evening News.
“There is truth in the talk about interest in me. It’s rewarding for me,” Perez told Radio Club Tenerife.
“There is much truth in the interest from Tottenham and Man United, but my place is at Newcastle.”

Speculation over his future at Manchester United has been growing all week after his side slumped to their sixth successive game without a win.

But Van Gaal produced one of the most entertaining five minutes of United's season off the pitch ahead of the Boxing Day trip to Stoke.

 

The Dutchman astonishingly walked out of his press conference after an incredible rant, in which he demanded an apology from the media.

Rumours have been swirling that he could be sacked and replaced by former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

“Has anybody in this room not a feeling to apologise to me? That's what I am wondering," he said.

“I think I was already sacked I have read. Or have been sacked. Or that my colleague [Jose Mourinho] was here already."

Had Manchester United 's performances on the pitch been as dramatic as LVG's five-minute Christmas address , he would not be fighting to save his job.

Instead of asking for an apology from the media over rumours - which started on Twitter, not in the papers - that you had been sacked on Tuesday, how about apologising for your dreary football, Louis?

It's all very well pointing out that United were top of the Premier League four weeks ago.

But today they are nine points off the pace in the title race.

Four weeks ago, they were still in the Champions League , too - but in 2016 they will be playing on Thursday nights in Europe. 

t is unfortunate that Van Gaal found himself batting away false rumours about his sacking and fielding anxious calls from his wife, children and friends.

When you are Manchester United manager, speculation goes with the territory, especially when results and performances are so poor.

But thanks for the mince pies and glass of wine, anyway. I know colleagues in the media appreciated such a festive gesture.
